It wasn’t long after that night that I moved in with Elise. Once our true feelings were out, we allowed ourselves to drown in our love for each other. Every spare minute we had, we spent together. Wherever we went, the other followed. Bryant had surprisingly managed to hang on to Christina for more than a few weeks.

It had been about two months and when we actually felt like being social rather than sequestering ourselves in our bedroom, we met with them for dinner or drinks. Normally, I could only take Bryant in small doses, but having the comfort of a constant relationship had mellowed him out a little, and I began to see a new side of him. I wouldn’t say we suddenly had bromance, but we managed to talk about deeper things than whatever new chick he was trying to score with or his boring-ass job that no one could ever remember what it was. He was after me to have a few guys’ nights out, but I knew it was only because he wanted to talk about Christina. As a friend, that was all well and fine, but I limited such talk to brief phone calls on my drive home from work because I wasn’t about to sacrifice a minute with my angel.

One evening, after a particularly long phone call listening to Bryant talk about what a firecracker Christina was and an even longer and arduous day at work, I came into the apartment ready to just shower and curl up in bed with my girl. Instead, I found her nearly bouncing off the walls.

“Oh my God, Justin! I’m so glad you’re home. I’ve been dying to speak to you all afternoon!”

I grinned at her, immediately infected by her good mood. I scooped her up into my arms and kissed her soundly. She allowed it for a moment, before squirming for me to put her down, her excitement so overwhelming, she couldn’t stay still.

“What’s gotten into you, Angel-face?” I asked, wondering what in the world could have given her such joy. “Did we win the lotto?”

“Better!” She finally paused to take a breath and led me over to the sofa. She sat down next to me, her knee drawn up as she turned to face me.

“You remember how I told you my mom had breast cancer?”

My chest tightened for a minute as I recalled all the times she had laid in my arms, telling me of her fears and crying because she might lose her mom. They had been close all her life, and she was terrified her mom could die. Realizing that things couldn’t be so bad since Elise was happier than I’d ever seen her, I nodded.

“She saw her doctor today. They’ve declared her cancer-free!”

I scooped her back up and swung her around, elated at the news. I’d met Elise’s mom just once and though she was admittedly standoffish at first, she told me she quickly warmed up when she saw how much I cared for her daughter.
